Headspace

Distance between the rear support surface of the ammunition (on the breech face) and the front support surface of the ammunition (usually in the chamber or on the rear barrel face for rimmed and semi-rimmed caliber). This dimension is mesured within a closed breech mechanism weapon.

Panel of headspace gauges. From left to right: gauge for rimmed caliber 7.62x54 r, gauge for the rim-less and bottlenecked "5.56 NATO" and ".223 Rem", flat gauge for revolver (multi-caliber: .38 Special, .357 Magnum but also, .44 Magnum, .45 Long Colt ...). The 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem gauges logically designate gauges using different standard systems.
